Onglyza (Saxagliptin) 5 mg is an oral medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs called DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors). The drug helps to regulate blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes by improving the body's ability to release insulin after meals and by reducing the amount of glucose (sugar) produced by the liver. Saxagliptin works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which is responsible for breaking down incretin hormones. These hormones help regulate blood sugar levels. By inhibiting DPP-4, Saxagliptin increases the levels of incretin hormones, which in turn helps the body produce more insulin and reduces the release of glucose from the liver after eating. The usual dose of Saxagliptin is 5 mg once daily, with or without food. In some cases, the dosage might be adjusted based on kidney function or other factors.
